Department of Malayalam
Malayalam language department started in Teresian College in the year 1981. Malayalam is offered as a second language for various UG courses such as BA, B.sc, B. Com and BBA. Malayalam department consists of students coming from all parts of Kerala. Smt. Kochubaby P. V. was appointed as the first Lecturer and HOD in the department and she retired in the year 2012. She is rendering her service in the department till date.
As the HOD of the Malayalam dept. I would like to insist and impart the following-
Learning Language develops the skill of reading, writing, expression, appreciation and better way of communication. The syllabus designed for the program is intended to train the imagination and capacity to thinks critically and Creativity about the world and their own country through the study of poetry, prose, drama, linguistic narratology and aesthetics in Malayalam language and literature.
Malayalam language tries to make the student community to study literature as well as the culture, poetry, sanskrit language and literature.
Malayalam language helps to know the modern Malayalam literature and to realise the social and political reality behind modernity in India. The students can also learn the culture of the ethnic groups and the traditions and practices of various folk and to value them.
Students comes to know the history of theatre and various streams of drama and acting. Language study helps to know the present day feminism and environmentalism. Composition writing and it’s methods are also the outcome of language study.
Study of language helps to grasp information from other languages and understand their culture and values. Being the mother tongue, the learning of Malayalam helps to understand the cultural, social, historical, religious, political and philosophical background of Kerala. It also helps to understand the various dialects within the state. Moreover the students are able to participate in various cultural festivals relates to Kerala culture.
Exposure
The students in Malayalam dept has some sort of exposure within the college as well as outside. Students can participate in various other competition such as quiz, essay writing, story writing, poem writing in Malayalam language. They contribute Malayalam creative articles for college magazines. Students celebrate onam, the famous Kerala festival. They participate in various programmes conducted by the organisations such as Kerala Samajam, Carmel Catholic Association, Kairali Malayalam Association and many more. Also they participate in intercollegiate competitions representing Kerala Culture, tradition and values.
